In North America, Toad in a Hole is an egg cooked in the middle of a toasted slice of bread with the middle of the bread cut out with a circle cookie cutter or biscuit cutter.
However, Toad in a Hole is not to be confused with Toad in the Hole, which originated in the UK and is something entirely different. Also known as Sausage Toad, Toad in the Hole is a traditional English version consisting of pork sausages in Yorkshire pudding batter, usually served with onion gravy and vegetables. Trust me, that's an entirely different dish, and you really don't want to get these two dishes confused! You can read more about Toad in the Hole HERE.
🥘 Ingredient Notes
For this egg in a hole recipe with cheese, you'll need a few simple ingredients:
- Bagel. You can use any type of bagel, but plain or everything bagel flavored bagels work really well with this recipe because you end up with a great sweet and savory flavor in combination with the egg.
- Cheddar cheese. I use sharp, low-fat cheddar cheese.
- Pineapple. You can use fresh or canned. I use canned because it's more convenient and economical. Just make sure you get the pineapple rings and cut them into the appropriate-sized pieces.

📖Variations & Sustitutions
- Cheese - you can use a slice of cheese instead of grated, American cheese, or Monterey Jack cheese.
- Bagel - you can use any type of bagel, or substitute white bread or Texas toast. You could also use everything bagel seasoning instead of an everything bagel.
- Fruit - you can use canned pineapple or fresh, and you could use either fresh or frozen raspberries
In North America, we also refer to this dish by the name ‘Egg in a Hole.' And according to an article in Eater, it's also known as 'egg in a hat,' 'egg in a basket,' and 'egg in a frame. '
However, although the origins of this recipe are unclear, an official recipe called "egg with a hat" first made an appearance in the Boston Cooking School Cookbook in the 1890s. It called for a cookie cutter to remove the bread's center, which, when served atop the cooked egg, became the "hat." You can read more about the origins of egg in a hole HERE.

For reasons I do not understand, in North America, we like to call the same recipe by several different names. But whatever you call this egg dish, I assure you, it's an easy and delicious breakfast!

🔪 How to Make Bagel Egg in a Hole
The best part is, this Egg in a Hole Bagel is a quick and simple cooked breakfast that kids can make for their Moms on their own. And if they are old enough, they can make it on the stove. If not, they can simply use the microwave. I have included step-by-step directions for both methods.
Stovetop Method (See recipe card for microwave method)
- Pat the pineapple dry with a towel
- Cut the pineapple into 6 pieces and arrange on a plate, as shown.
- Place the other side of the bagel on a plate to help space, and place the pineapple.
- Add a raspberry to each piece of pineapple.
- Cut green onion diagonally so it fits against the stem as a leaf (as shown below)
- Add green onions to the bottom of the plate.
- Heat a non-stick skillet on medium heat on the stovetop. (or add a little non-stick cooking spray)
- Butter ½ bagel and place buttered side face down in the frying pan. Crack an egg into the center of the bagel so the egg yolk is facing up (it's sunny side up).
- Cook for 1 minute with the lid on.
- Add cheese.
- Cover and cook for about 30 -60 seconds or until cheese is melted.
- Place cooked egg in a bagel hole on a plate and adjust as needed. Serve immediately.

Expert Recipe Tips
- Use a non-stick pan or cooking spray: This will help prevent the bagel and egg from sticking and make cleanup much easier, especially when kids are cooking!
- Pat fruit dry: If you’re using canned pineapple, make sure to pat it dry with a paper towel to avoid extra moisture on the plate, which can make the bagel soggy.
- Crack the egg into a small bowl first: For younger kids or less experienced cooks, cracking the egg into a small bowl first helps avoid shell pieces and makes it easier to pour into the bagel hole.
- Low and slow cooking: Keep the heat at medium or medium-low to cook the egg gently and prevent the bagel from burning before the egg is done.
- Toast bagel lightly before microwaving: If you're using the microwave method, toasting the bagel first gives it a better texture and prevents it from getting soggy.
- Cheese last: Add the cheese just before the egg finishes cooking to ensure it melts perfectly without overcooking the egg.
- Create an even flower shape: Use the second half of the bagel as a guide when arranging your pineapple petals to get a nice symmetrical flower!
🔥 Kitchen Safety Reminders for Kids
- Use oven mitts: Always use oven mitts or a towel when touching anything hot like the frying pan or skillet.
- Keep handles turned in: Turn the frying pan handle inward on the stovetop so it doesn't get bumped accidentally.
- Microwave with caution: Always use a microwave-safe cover when cooking in the microwave, and be careful when lifting it off (it gets hot!).
- Clean as you go: Wipe up spills quickly to avoid slips and keep your workspace safe and tidy.
- Adult supervision is a good idea: Even if you’re a pro in the kitchen, it’s always smart to have an adult nearby, especially when using the stove or microwave.

🌡️Storage
Store the fruit separately from the egg and cheese. The bagels can be stored at room temperature.

This Bagel Toad in a Hole Egg breakfast is such a fun twist on the classic. I love how it's made to look like a flower with fruit petals - it really makes it special for Mother's Day or any day you want to add a little joy to breakfast. It's easy enough for kids to make, but looks impressive enough to feel like a treat. The best part is you can make it on the stove or in the microwave, so it will work for any kitchen setup.
