In North America Toad in a Hole is an egg cooked in the middle of a toasted slice of bread with the middle of the bread cut out with a circle cookie cutter or biscuit cutter. However, Toad in a Hole is not to be confused with Toad in the Hole, which originated in the UK and is something entirely different. Also known as Sausage Toad, Toad in the hole is a traditional English version consisting of pork sausages in Yorkshire pudding batter, usually served with onion gravy and vegetables. Trust me, that's an entirely different dish and you really don't want to get these two dishes confused! You can read more about Toad in the Hole HERE.
🥘 Ingredients
For this egg in a hole recipe with cheese, you'll need a few simple ingredients:
- bagel * use any type of bagel, but everything bagel works really well
- egg
- sharp cheddar cheese * I use low-fat
- pineapple * you can use fresh or canned
- raspberries
- butter
- green onion
In North America, we also refer to this dish by the name ‘Egg in a hole.' And according to an article in Eater, it's also known as 'egg in a hat,' 'egg in a basket' and 'egg in a frame'. However, although the origins of this recipe are unclear, an official recipe called "egg with a hat" first made an appearance in the Boston Cooking School Cookbook in the 1890's. It called for a cookie cutter to remove the bread's center, which, when served atop the cooked egg, became the "hat." You can read more about the origins of egg in a hole HERE.
For reasons I do not understand, in North America, we like to call the same recipe by several different names. But whatever you call this egg dish, I assure you, it's an easy and delicious breakfast!

This Bagel Toad in a Hole Egg breakfast is such a fun twist on the classic. I love how it's made to look like a flower with fruit petals - it really makes it special for Mother's Day or any day you want to add a little joy to breakfast. It's easy enough for kids to make, but looks impressive enough to feel like a treat. The best part is you can make it on the stove or in the microwave, so it will work for any kitchen setup.
