This easy Avocado Cream Sauce recipe, made with fresh avocado, and Greek yogurt, is both quick and easy. You'll love the creamy texture and fresh flavors in this healthy and light avocado lime sauce! It pairs well with so many dishes and is the perfect topping for poke bowls, tacos, carnitas, quesadillas, fajitas, and can even be used as a sauce or a dip.
This recipe is extra popular during Cinco de Mayo and in the summer, but it's great any time of year. I originally created this sauce for my Chicken Poke Bowls, but quickly realized just what a versatile topping it is and how many other recipes it pairs exceptionally well with! This easy avocado sauce is also WW friendly and takes only 5 minutes to make!

🥘Ingredients
For this avocado sauce recipe, you'll need the following ingredients:
- 2 ripe avocados
- 3 tsp lime juice (from concentrate)- or use 6 teaspoon fresh lime juice
- 4 tbsp non-fat Greek yogurt
- 2 fresh garlic cloves, minced
- 1 tablespoon fresh cilantro
- ¼ tsp salt
🔪Instructions
Remove avocado flesh from the skin and mash with a fork in a medium bowl, making an avocado puree
Add remaining ingredients and mix everything together until smooth. It's okay if it's still a little lumpy.
* You could also puree it all in a blender or food processor to make it very smooth, but it's really not necessary.
📖Variations & Substitutions
- Lime juice - you can substitute fresh lime juice for concentrated but you'll need double the amount (6 tsps)
- Greek yogurt- you can use full-fat Greek yogurt if you prefer or use regular yogurt, but the sauce won't be as thick. You could also sub non-fat sour cream, but it won't be as tangy.
- Cilantro - you can use dried cilantro, but you'll need half the amount and I don't recommend using dried
- Garlic- you can use minced garlic in a jar, instead of fresh garlic cloves. In a real pinch, you could use garlic powder, though I don't recommend this.
- Dairy-free - you can use a diary-free yogurt substitute (So Delicious has a plain coconut milk yogurt that works well)
- Spicy - add some red pepper flakes
🥗 Pairing
My absolute favorite combo with this creamy sauce is Chicken Poke Bowls!
Avocado cream sauce also pairs exceptionally well with Mexican foods. Here are a few of my favorite ways to eat it:
You can also serve avocado cream sauce with:
- chicken skewers
- carnitas
- egg bites
- quesadillas
- Mexican Sheet Pan Fried Eggs
- taquitos
- on salmon or salmon burgers
- Chicken burgers
This sauce also works well as a salad dressing or a dipping sauce for tortilla chips:
🍽Equipment
You will need a mixing bowl, a mixing spoon, and a fork for this creamy avocado sauce. A food processor is optional.
🌡️Storage
Store leftover avocado yogurt sauce in the fridge in an airtight container for up 2 days. Beyond 2 days it will brown too much and look unappetizing. If you are only storing it for a few hours, you can cover it with a piece of plastic wrap. This recipe is best when it's made just prior to serving.
These ingredients do/don't stand up well to freezing.
👪 Serving Size
This recipe makes 6 servings. Each serving is about 2 heaping tbsps. However, you can half, double, or triple the recipe by clicking on the serving number and selecting the number of servings you'd like. The ingredient quantities will automatically adjust.
🔢WW Points
There is no heavy cream in this recipe because it's made with non-fat Greek yogurt and therefore Weight Watchers friendly @ 3 WW points per serving (2 heaping tbsps). And although avocados are higher fat and more WW points than most fruits (yes- it's a fruit!) they are good healthy fats, and the taste is worth every point!
💭Top Tips
When picking avocados at the grocery store, you will want to look for avocados that are a darker color, but feel slightly soft, yet not squishy/mushy to the touch.
Make sure you don’t poke it with your fingers. To test for ripeness, hold it in the palm of your hand and squeeze it gently. If it gives a little, it’s ripe.
Store them in the refrigerator if you plan to eat them in a day or two, as this slows the ripening process.
If storing on the counter, store avocados away from ethylene-producing fruits like apples and bananas; unless you want your avocados to ripen faster.
🦺Food safety
- Don't leave food sitting out at room temperature for extended periods
- Always have good ventilation when using a gas stove
- Never leave cooking food unattended
❔ Frequently Asked Questions
Guacamole usually has tomatoes and onions in it, and no creamy substance such as sour cream or Greek yogurt.
