🥘 Ingredient Notes
This easy, creamy Green Grasshopper Mocktail is non-alcoholic version of the famous Grasshopper drink (cocktail). Made with white chocolate and mint flavors, it's a fun drink for kids and the perfect way to celebrate St. Patrick's Day!
For this green mocktail recipe, you'll need:

- White hot chocolate mix. I buy this in bulk at Bulk Barn- it's the most economical way to buy it. Make sure it's NOT candy cane!
- Half and half cream. I use half and half because it is the perfect consistency for thickening this drink.
- Peppermint and Almond extracts. This flavor duo, mixed with the white hot chocolate is what gives it that iconic Grasshopper taste!
- Green food coloring. I recommend using gel food coloring. Wilton Kelly Green is the color I use. You can add as much as you like until you get the color you desire.
- Whipped cream. You can use real whipped cream or spray whipped cream in a can.
- Fresh Mint leaves. A fresh mint garnish really adds freshness and a splash of vibrant green to this drink.
Variation
Frozen Grasshopper Drink with Ice Cream (non-alcoholic) ❄️
- Blend the original mocktail ingredients with 1-2 cups of vanilla ice cream and a handful of ice until thick and creamy.
- This will create a frozen, creamy slushie version of the mocktail.
- Pour into glasses and garnish as desired.
🔪How to Make a Grasshopper Mocktail

- Step 1: Add boiling hot water and white chocolate mix to a medium bowl and whisk until powder is dissolved into water. *I find this is the easiest and least messy way. However, if you prefer, you can do this right in the glass (diving equally between the glasses).

- Step 2: Add milk, half and half cream, and extracts.

- Step 3: Then add food coloring and mix until incorporated. *You will notice I added more food coloring when I made this drink for the process shots, compared to how much I added when I made the drink for the final images.

- Step 4: Add the mixture to a large pourable measuring cup (or use a funnel) and pour the mixture into the glasses.

- Step 5: Pour mixture up to about ¼-1/2 inch below the glass rim. Add ice if desired. *If you are using spray whipped cream in a can leave a 1-1 ½ inch gap. **If you are adding ice, leave 2-3 inches.

- Step 6: Garnish with whipped cream and mint leaves.
Expert Recipe Tips
- Use Very Hot Water. When dissolving the white hot chocolate mix, ensure the water is very hot to dissolve the powder fully. This prevents any grainy texture in the drink.
- Chill Your Glasses. For an extra refreshing experience, chill your milkshake glasses in the freezer for 10–15 minutes before serving.
- Use Gel Food Coloring for Best Results. Gel food coloring provides a more vibrant green color with less product compared to liquid food coloring. Wilton Kelly Green is the ideal color for this recipe.
- Blend for a Creamier Texture. For a smooth and frothy texture, mix all ingredients in a blender for a few seconds before serving. This adds a light and airy quality to the drink.
- Make It a Frozen Treat. Turn this into a frozen mint chocolate mocktail by blending it with 1 cup of ice for a slushy consistency. Or after it's made, put it in the freezer for 2.5-3 hours.
- Whipped Cream for the Win. For the best presentation and taste, add whipped cream just before serving so it stays fluffy and fresh.
- Make a Big Batch for Parties. Hosting a party? You can easily double or triple the recipe. Store it in a large juice jug in the fridge and stir before serving.
🍸Grasshopper Cocktail History
The grasshopper cocktail derives its name from its green color, which comes from crème de menthe. It's a retro cocktail that had its heyday in the 1950s and 1960s. It was said to have been invented at the bar "Tajugue's" in the French Quarter of New Orleans, Louisiana, in 1918 by owner, Philip Guichet. You can read more about the invention of the Grasshopper cocktail HERE.
