If you love the decadent combination of rich chocolate and tart cherries, these Healthy Black Forest Overnight Oats are the ultimate morning reset. To celebrate cherry season, I've taken the classic flavors of a German Black Forest Torte and turned them into a high-protein, 5-minute meal prep win.

This isn't your average bowl of soggy oats. By using fresh cherries and a double hit of unsweetened cocoa, I've created a scrumptious and velvety breakfast that tastes like dessert for breakfast, but fits perfectly into your healthy lifestyle. It's Weight Watchers-friendly, and 100% "The Lazy Way" approved-meaning you do the work in minutes tonight and wake up to a gourmet breakfast tomorrow.

🥘Ingredient Notes

- Fresh Cherries: Mashing half of them at the bottom of the jar creates an "instant" raw sauce that infuses the oats with flavor.
- Unsweetened Cocoa Powder: 2 full tablespoons provide that deep chocolate hit.
- Large Flake (Old Fashioned) Oats/Rolled Oats: These are essential for the perfect texture. They stay chewy and distinct overnight, whereas quick oats can turn into mush.
- Plain Non-fat Greek Yogurt: This adds creaminess and a massive protein boost for very few points.
- Almond Extract: It provides that authentic "cherry pie" aroma that defines a true Black Forest dessert.
- Semi-sweet chocolate: I use Bakers chocolate and grate it.
- Lemon Zest: Don't skip this! It's the "invisible" ingredient that brightens the chocolate and makes the cherry flavor pop.
- Whipped Cream: *I also use a little of the light real whipped cream (in a spray bottle) because it's only 1 point for 4 tablespoons of this whipped cream and I love whipped cream! There are a couple of different brands you can buy that are only 1 point. Dairyland and Gay Lea are both brands that are WW friendly.

📖 Variations & Substitutions
- Chewy texture: If you like a chewier texture, use steel-cut oats.
- Gluten-Free: Use certified gluten-free rolled oats.
- Dairy-Free: Use a thick coconut-based yogurt and unsweetened almond or oat milk.
- Sweetener: If you want a 0-point sweetener, swap the agave for a liquid monk fruit or stevia. But only use ½ the amount.
- The "Lazy" Quick Version: If you only have quick oats, let them sit for just 20-30 minutes instead of overnight to maintain some texture.
🔪Step-by-Step: How to Make Black Forest Overnight Oats

Expert Recipe Tips
- The "Straw & Bottle" Pitting Hack: To make this recipe quick, place a cherry on top of an empty glass bottle. Use a sturdy reusable straw to "pop" the pit through the center into the bottle. It's the fastest way to prep a big batch of fruit! *See July's newsletter for video!
- Expert Tip: Choose Your Oats Wisely! For that spectacular chewy texture, I always recommend using Large Flake (Old Fashioned) OatThey hold their shape overnight, giving you a satisfying breakfast that tastes just like a slice of cherry pie. If you only have quick oats on hand, just let them soak for 30 minutes instead of overnight to avoid a mushy texture! And use steel-cut oats for an even chewier texture!
- The Cocoa Whisk: Cocoa powder can be clumpy! Whisk it into the milk and yogurt before adding the dry oats to ensure a smooth, velvety chocolate sauce.
- The "Pinch" of Salt: A tiny bit of sea salt is the secret to making chocolate taste "chocolatier." It balances the tartness of the cherries and the bitterness of the cocoa perfectly.
- The 1-Cup Rule: For the best flavor, use a full cup of cherries per jumbo portion. Mashing half of them releases the juices needed to hydrate the oats without needing extra syrup.
- Serving Temperature: While these are designed to be eaten cold, you can pop the jar in the microwave for 30 seconds if you prefer a warm "pudding" style breakfast.
🥗 What to Serve with Overnight Oats (Black Forest)

These Overnight Oats are a filling meal in themselves, but if you have an 8-oz portion, you could serve it with Air Fryer Turkey Sausages and Homemade Masala Chai Tea (shown).
🌡️Storage
- Fridge: Store in airtight jars for up to 5 days. This makes them the ultimate Sunday meal-prep for the work week!
- Freezer: I do not recommend freezing overnight oats, as the texture of the yogurt and oats can become grainy and unappealing once thawed.
👪 Servings

🔢WW Points
This recipe is 5 WW points for an 8 oz serving. You can cut back the points by using liquid monkfruit, but you'll only need half the amount (¼ cup). *See note on ww friendly whipped cream in recipe card notes or ingredient notes!
❔Recipe FAQs
Yes! You can enjoy these all year long. Just thaw the cherries slightly so you can mash them at the bottom of the jar. You may need to reduce the milk by 1 tablespoon as frozen fruit releases more liquid.
Not at all! Any airtight container or even a small bowl covered with plastic wrap will work. Mason jars are just the "Lazy Way" to make them portable for your commute!
Mashing half the cherries is the secret to a spectacular flavor! It releases the natural juices and pigments, which infuse the oats with a deep cherry flavor while they soak. The remaining whole halves provide that nice texture in every bite.
