This Garlic Mayo Dipping sauce for sweet potato fries is seriously next level! I tried this dip at Moxie's, fell in love with it, and just had to create my own copycat version. This Garlic Mayo Dipping Sauce is the ideal dip for sweet potato fries. It has a creamy texture and the perfect blend of spices and herbs. It also makes a great snack or side dish and is quick and easy to prepare.

This dip for sweet potato fries was inspired, obviously by my sweet potato fries (also a Moxie's copycat)! By far, this is the best dipping sauce for sweet potato fries I have ever tasted! However, this is the perfect condiment for pairing with any fries, such as regular potato fries, carrot fries, or parsnip fries. When I set out to make my own copycat recipe, it was solely based on memory. And I'm proud to say that after a few attempts, this was the delicious result.
My family also thinks it's really close to the original, and it was a big hit! It is one of our favorite recipes and is frequently requested in our house.
🥘Ingredient Notes
For this sweet potato fries dip sauce, you'll need quite a few ingredients, but trust me, it's worth it!

- Sour cream. I use low-fat.
- Mayonnaise. I use Hellman's ½ the fat.
- Lemon juice and chives. Fresh makes all the difference!
Spices (see photo below)
- Onion powder. Do NOT use onion salt - it will turn out too salty.
- White pepper. I use white pepper because it was used in the original recipe. White pepper is used for its bright, clean, and slightly floral flavor, which adds a kick without the dark black specks, making it ideal for light-colored dishes.

📖Variations & Substitutions
- White pepper - you can substitute black pepper in a pinch
- Wine vinegar - although I strongly recommend you purchase this for the recipe (you can also use it in my Caesar salad recipe and several others) you can use ½ white vinegar and ½ dry white wine if necessary
- Chives: I recommend using fresh chives, as they are critical to the flavor of the dip. But if for some reason, you can't get your hands on them, substitute freeze-dried chives.
- Lemon juice- Use fresh! But if you can't get your hands on fresh lemon juice for some reason, use only half the amount of concentrated lemon juice.
- Sour Cream - you could substitute plain Greek yogurt
- Spicy - add additional cayenne, chili powder, Cajun seasoning, red pepper flakes, or a little hot sauce (such as sriracha sauce) for a spicy kick
🔪How to Make Sweet Potato Fries Dip
This Sweet Potatoes Fries Dip Sauce recipe is as easy as mixing it all together in a small bowl!
For best results, refrigerate for 30 minutes to allow the garlic to blend in (optional).

Expert Recipe Tips
- Use freshly minced garlic for the best flavor. Pre-minced garlic in jars can taste sharper or slightly metallic, while freshly minced garlic blends more smoothly into the creamy base.
- Finely chop the chives to ensure even distribution. Larger pieces can overpower bites of the dip, but a fine chop allows the herb flavor to mix throughout without dominating.
- Whisk the dip thoroughly to create a smooth, cohesive texture. Mixing well prevents small pockets of unmixed spices or mustard that can throw off the flavor.
- Taste and adjust the seasoning after chilling. The garlic intensifies as it rests, so make final tweaks-like adjusting lemon or salt-after the chilling period for the most accurate flavor.
- Let the lemon juice sit on the garlic for a minute before mixing everything together. This lightly "cooks" the garlic, softening its raw bite and helping it integrate better into the dip.
- Use low-fat products cautiously. Although they work well, some low-fat sour creams can be thinner, so you may need to add a spoonful more to maintain the ideal thickness.
- Pair this dip with hot fries for the best contrast. The temperature difference between the chilled dip and hot fries enhances the flavor and mimics a restaurant-style experience.
- Make a double batch for entertaining. This dip disappears quickly-especially when paired with multiple fry varieties-so preparing extra ensures you don't run out.
- Store it in a shallow container for faster chilling and better flavor blending. A wider container increases surface area, allowing the dip to chill more quickly and evenly.
There are very few recipes that I will go to all that effort for because, to be honest, creating a copycat recipe is a heck of a lot more work than simply developing a recipe from scratch! So for me to expel all that energy, it's gotta be damn tasty or at least have some serious nostalgia associated with it.
My copycat Moxie's Grilled Steak Salad (shown below) is one of those recipes, as well as a lighter version of IHOP's Harvest Grain & Nut Pancakes I created, Calgary Ginger Beef, and my copycat of Bonanza's Monterey Chicken. But creating this garlic mayo sauce for sweet potato fries was well worth the time and effort!

🍟What to eat with this Mayo Dipping Sauce for Fries?
Although pairing this dip with homemade sweet potato fries or sweet potato wedges is the perfect combination, you can serve it with any type of fries, including regular fries. It also pairs really well with parsnip fries and air fryer carrot fries (shown below)!

Try this dip with Chicken strips or chicken nuggets. The creamy, garlicky flavor pairs perfectly with crispy breaded chicken. You can also use it as a spread to give chicken sandwiches a tangy, flavorful boost. Try it with my Chicken Breast Burger Recipe! I also recommend pairing it with my Pan-Fried Salmon Patties, as the acidity and herbs complement mild fish beautifully!

To make this sauce for sweet potato fries, you will need a sharp knife, a cutting board, a garlic press and juicer (affiliate links) will also come in handy.

🌡️Storage
Store this dip in an airtight container for up to 4 days. However, if you're just storing it overnight, then you can simply cover it in plastic wrap. These ingredients do not stand up to freezing.

Yes. This dip actually tastes even better after resting because the flavors meld together. You can make it up to 24 hours in advance and store it in the fridge until serving.
If your dip turns out thinner than expected, your sour cream or mayo may have been extra soft or watery. You can thicken it by adding a spoonful of extra sour cream or a pinch more garlic powder or onion powder to help absorb moisture.
